Understanding the fundamentals of engaging in a digital world has never been more important. The rapid shift to providing more engagement opportunities online in response to the global pandemic means more people are navigating this terrain and trying to figure out how to maintain the best practices of public engagement planning and implementation. This three-hour workshop is designed to acknowledge the prevalence of digital media in comparison to other engagement techniques, explore its impacts including opportunities and challenges, and reinforce best practices for planning and implementing engagement digitally.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the prevalence of digital media use in comparison to other engagement techniques

  • Discuss the potential impacts and considerations for a rapid shift to primarily or completely digital engagement

  • Assess digital engagement experiences through the lens of principles

  • Examine various aspects of the digital engagement planning process

  • Explore possible challenges, risks, and barriers in relation to digital engagement

  • Discern the relevant details of a digital engagement scenario. 

  • Choose appropriate tools and/or techniques to address digital engagement needs.

  • Defend choices using concepts explored during the workshop.

Maria is a much sought after critical thinker and consummate problem solver, with over 20 years of achieving successful outcomes. She has advised and supported many organizations in enhancing their engagement efforts, developing and facilitating business planning and strategies, and providing professional development and training. Her experience includes highly complex, multi-party projects featuring multi-stage engagement processes. Maria is IAP2 trained and holds a Master’s degree in Communications and Technology specializing in digital engagement.
