This course offers community engagement professionals a foundational understanding of culturally appropriate methods for meaningful engagement with Indigenous Peoples. While there is tremendous diversity within and among Indigenous communities across Canada, there are shared experiences related to colonization that affect how Indigenous people and communities participate in engagement processes. Participants will build on their existing understanding of the history and experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, moving from knowledge to application in an engagement context. Together we will explore key considerations to apply when selecting engagement methods, including Indigenous governance, language, Ceremony, community structure, interconnectedness, effects of colonization, identity, power dynamics, legal rights, competing interests, and the presence of non-Indigenous (or Settler) participants.
This course assumes participants have a basic awareness of the history and experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Indigenous Awareness for Engagement Professionals or equivalent knowledge is a recommended prerequisite.

Steve Francis is the President of 3S Consulting Services, a Calgary based Indigenous consulting company. A member of Nekaneet First Nation in southwest Saskatchewan and a law school graduate, Steve provides strategic guidance and workshops focused on Aboriginal consultation and Indigenous participation in energy development. He is passionate about educating organizations and their personnel about Indigenous interests and proposing policy solutions that benefit Indigenous people and the federal or provincial Crown respectively.
Anne Harding, CP3 is the Owner of Forum Community Relations Inc., a Calgary based consulting company dedicated to catalyzing better communities through Indigenous relations and community engagement. In her 17+ years of experience as a community and Indigenous engagement professional, she has engaged with over 80 Indigenous communities and organizations across Canada on economic development, community engagement, reconciliation, education, training, and resource consultation initiatives. Anne holds an MA in Corporate-Aboriginal Relations and a CP3 (Certified Public Participation Professional) designation through IAP2 Canada.
