This webinar will share the story of how a conflict lasting over a decade between the Shuar community in Ecuador and Lowell Mineral Exploration was transformed into a strategic alliance through a facilitated dialogue process led by Luis Ore.
The conflict began in 2006 when the community expelled the company over ancestral land ownership. In 2017, a group of Shuar leaders initiated direct dialogue. The process, involving meetings in Lima and Canada, focused on identifying common ground: the community sought title restitution and development, while the company needed social viability for its project.
A milestone was reached in 2018 with the "Declaration of Warintza," achieving the unconditional return of land titles and laying the foundation for an agreement. This culminated in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for joint subsoil studies, establishing monitoring committees and a social development fund, and in 2024, an updated Impact and Benefits Agreement.
This case is presented as a successful model of responsible and participatory mining, demonstrating that dialogue can overcome conflicts and build lasting alliances between companies and indigenous communities
