This course gives public and community engagement professionals a fundamental level of understanding about the history and experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Participants will learn about the shared story of Indigenous and all Canadians and reflect on how that shared past affects our unique and shared experiences today, with a specific focus on decision-making structures and processes. Co-delivered by Indigenous and Settler trainers whose experiences as engagement professionals bring the content to life, this impactful course builds fundamental understanding through a lens of meaningful engagement and reconciliation.

Please note that scheduling online training is very different from face-to-face. This online course will be offered in two segments: one, three hour session and one, two hour session.

Just like face-to-face training, we expect all participants to attend all sessions listed in the event.

Learning Objectives:

Through this session, participants will:

  • Recall a historical overview of experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada
  • Reflect on the current interests of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and the impact of government policies of assimilation, including the Indian residential school legacy, with a specific focus on decision-making structures and processes
  • Discuss complexities regarding the intersection between Indigenous Peoples and various types of development and decision-making in Canada
  • Discuss strategies for effective and meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities, including the roles of engagement professionals and settler-allies
  • Identify opportunities for continued learning and professional development in Indigenous engagement through IAP2 Canada


Trainers: Steve Francis & Anne Harding, CP3

Steve FrancisSteve Francis is the President of 3S Consulting Services, a Calgary based Indigenous consulting company. A member of Nekaneet First Nation in southwest Saskatchewan and a law school graduate, Steve provides strategic guidance and workshops focused on Aboriginal consultation and Indigenous participation in energy development. He is passionate about educating organizations and their personnel about Indigenous interests and proposing policy solutions that benefit Indigenous people and the federal or provincial Crown respectively.


Anne HardingAnne Harding, CP3 is the Owner of Forum Community Relations Inc., a Calgary based consulting company dedicated to promoting and creating space for meaningful engagement, reconciliation, and relationship-building. Anne has also worked in Stakeholder & Aboriginal Relations at Suncor Energy since 2007. She has engaged with over 60 Indigenous communities and organizations across Canada on economic development, community engagement, education, training, and resource consultation initiatives. Anne holds an MA in Corporate-Aboriginal Relations and a CP3 (Certified Public Participation Professional) designation through IAP2 Canada.
