Indigenous Awareness for Engagement Professionals

This course gives public and community engagement professionals a fundamental level of understanding about the history and experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Participants will learn about the shared story of Indigenous and all Canadians and reflect on how that shared past affects our unique and shared experiences today, with a specific focus on decision-making structures and processes. Co-delivered by Indigenous and Settler trainers whose experiences as engagement professionals bring the content to life, this impactful course builds fundamental understanding through a lens of meaningful engagement and reconciliation.

Learning Objectives

Through this session, participants will:

• Recall a historical overview of experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada
• Reflect on the current interests of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and the impact of government policies of assimilation, including the Indian residential school legacy, with a specific focus on decision-making structures and processes
• Discuss complexities regarding the intersection between Indigenous Peoples and various types of development and decision-making in Canada
• Discuss strategies for effective and meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities, including the roles of engagement professionals and settler-allies
• Identify opportunities for continued learning and professional development in Indigenous engagement through IAP2 Canada
